Subject:                COVID-19 (Cornonavirus) Update

Yesterday, March 8, 2020, public health experts at the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and education officials with the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Higher Education Coordinating Commission issued guidance to schools for decision-making concerning the coronavirus in Oregon.

At this time, the guidance recommends against closing schools where no cases of COVID-19 are present. Further, it is recommended that schools consider all alternatives before closing a school in the event that a student or staff member is detected with the virus.

The guidance recognizes that schools are vital to student well-being by providing access to nutritious food.

Under existing OHA guidance, individuals who have COVID-19 will be subject to self-isolation to prevent others from becoming infected. These measures include increased frequency of hand washing and cleaning high-touch, high-traffic areas frequently.

Most people with COVID-19 have mild symptoms. If you are feeling sick with mild symptoms and do not need to seek medical care, stay home while you recover. If you are sick and plan to seek care, please call ahead before going in so arrangements can be made to prevent exposure to others.

Respectfully,

Malcom McRae, Superintendent CAL School District
