CAL SD furlough days - Like other school districts in Oregon, we anticipate budget reductions of approximately 8% in the 2020-21 year. To save funds, all district staff will be furloughed one day weekly (May 22-June 12). NOTE: Teachers may not take the same day off each week.
Date: May 20, 2020 Crow Applegate Lorane Community, The following is meant to give guidance to our upcoming graduation ceremony on June 5th at 7pm, gates open at 6pm. This graduation ceremony is not required by any seniors or their families. We want to put people’s safety and health at the top of our priorities. We will be adhering to all social distancing guidelines, and ask attendees to do the same. To start, in following guidelines, this year’s graduation will be held at our football field. Graduates will be seated in chairs on the field, six feet apart, facing our stands. All seniors and speakers will be required to wear masks. People attending the ceremony will remain in their cars the entirety of the ceremony, parked around the track. Upon arrival at the field, a staff member will be directing cars and handing out programs and we apologize that no preferential parking will be able to be given to families as parking will be based on arrival order. Families safely carpooling is encouraged to limit the amount of vehicles present. Graduation starts at 7pm and we encourage people to arrive earlier to make sure the extra requirements to parking will be wrapping up prior to the event starting. On the track we ask vehicles to maintain a slow and safe speed during the entire ceremony process. During the ceremony, we will be using the stadiums speakers, but will also have the speakers being broadcasted over the radio. This is a short distance broadcast and most likely will not be able to be obtained much farther from the school’s grounds. In addition, we plan on broadcasting the ceremony via live stream over Facebook or YouTube. We hope the live stream will help people who want to remain home to still be capable of being a part of the ceremony. In addition, the school will be taking pictures of the entire ceremony and each graduate to be shared with all of the families. The ceremony itself will hopefully feel very normal. Graduates enter, take their seats in front of the stands. A special presentation of the Star Spangled Banner will be given by Mr. Dixon on his trombone. We will then have the speeches given. When it is time, graduates will be walking up to the stands, one at a time, and receive their diploma. At this time, board member Jeff Ramp will be sharing a story of the graduate and listing any/all awards and scholarships given to the student. After diplomas are given, the graduates will be able to toss their caps on the football field; all while maintaining social distancing guidelines. To end, and possibly the hardest part to follow guidelines, is that graduates will be asked to get in their vehicles immediately after the ceremony is finished. We plan on having the graduates taking a lap with their families, and then will leave the school grounds immediately afterwards. Once the graduates have left the track, staff will direct attendees to exit the school’s grounds. We ask that all follow social distancing guidelines by not getting out of their vehicle for pictures and leave school grounds immediately after the ceremony. As we near the date, I would like to state that these details are subject to change, and any changes will be communicated. If you have any questions on this process, please contact me at my email below. Thank you, Principal Rodemack firstname.lastname@example.org

Students/Parents, We start a new journey in education this week that has never been done before. In a short time, our world has been told to change what we deemed normal. Society has been asked to adjust and adjust over and over. We may not know when these social oddities may stop, but we do know one thing, education must go on. Our staff has put in a massive amount of effort to change their classrooms for distance learning. I can honestly say, through the work I have witnessed, that the staff at Crow Middle/High School cares deeply about their students! At the front of all of our conversations it has had the students in mind. Instead of complaining, having fear, or anxiety, our staff has asked how? How can we best serve our community and students? I believe they are going to achieve this goal of providing education in the best way possible for the students. In these next few weeks, we will all have to learn these new formats and skills. It will involve patience from all parties as we embark on this journey. With that, I want to give some advice for families that I hope will help. This is just advice that works for me, but I want to acknowledge that all families are different, and what works for yours can look many different ways. 1. Communication will be key. I encourage you all to communicate often with the teachers. No question is too small. Students have to be willing to ask through email, chats, or calls to teachers about what they need to know. Teachers can no longer read the non-verbal ques that they had in the classroom. 2. Create a work space for your student. It is best to try and find a space where your student can focus and work in a quiet place. I know this isn’t always possible, but try your best to provide a space for students to work. With the weather being better, this doesn’t even need to be inside, just one that creates focus. 3. Set up schedules. Along with a space to focus, students often underestimate how much time online learning can be. Our staff has been informed that their lessons should take about 30 minutes per class. That means a student with a full schedule could have upwards of three and a half hours of work a day, every day. This time doesn’t have to be done all at once, in fact, I encourage you to break this time up throughout the day. Whatever works for your student, set up a schedule for them to try and follow. Set timers and goals for each work period. I would also encourage physical breaks. Have your student go do something active during their breaks that will help reset their minds. 4. Patience, patience, patience! This is new for everyone. It will not be perfect. It is ok if it doesn’t go as smooth as you expected at first. Have patience in figuring out how these new things best operate for you and your student. If the internet goes down, that is ok. Work to get it back, and get back at the grind when you have it. Just to let you know, Rays is offering free internet to anyone that needs it, and our school is working on systems to help our community. If something is not working for you, let the teachers know and we will try to reach your needs. 5. Enjoy these moments. I have seen so many posts on social media, joking in nature, about how tired parents are of their children being at home. I encourage you to be one that fights this stereotype. The adults of the house set the tone for everyone. If the kids feel a tension or frustration, it will be passed on to them. When I speak to kids about what is the most important thing in their life, the number one answer, without question, is FAMILY! Kids love their families, even though teenagers can be fun at showing it sometimes, and we are getting more family time than I have ever had in my life. Love it, embrace it, and cherish how much time we get to spend with our families in this unprecedented time. To end, if any of our families have questions or concerns, please let us know. Those in need of a Chromebook will get the opportunity to check one out this week, stay tuned for communication on where and when. Thank you for all you do for our students. Sincerely, Principal Rodemack

Mr. Dixon is doing an awesome art project in his high school class and has the following request, "The art class is beginning an "Altered Art" unit, that is taking pre-existing materials such as books, postcards, games, etc., and turning them into unique works of multi-media art. If you have any of the following things to spare laying around then they would be appreciated to help in the project: >Board games and their pieces. These do NOT have to be complete and it's a great way to get rid of your old Scrabble or Monopoly game that is missing too many bits to be playable. >Hard back books. Older and quirky are great. Old school books like Dick & Jane reading primers are the best. These books will be heavily modified to make this art. >Cloth scraps and other bits and bobs. Twine. Buttons. Lace. Old calendars. Keys. Small things that can be glued down. Thank you!! I will try and record the progress the students make as they explore this project." Any materials can be brought to the CMHS front office. Thank you!
Correction, the concert for 12/18 is cancelled not today. Again, this is for the high school. The elementary concert is still happening today. Sorry for any confusion.
From Mr. Dixon, "The band concert scheduled for tomorrow (12/17) has had to be postponed due to too many injuries or illnesses. I will be rescheduling it for the second week of January." If you have any questions, feel free to contact the front office. This is for CMHS.

CMHS is offering an amazing field trip this Thursday to see the Ballet Fantastique as a school. For this field trip we ask kids to pay six dollars to cover ticket costs. We are well aware that not all students are able to pay this, and in no way would we ever make that a restriction in students having an educational experience, however, we are asking if people would be willing to help students with this cost as an anonymous scholarship. If so, you can contact our front office at 541 935 2227. Thank you all so much! Principal Rodemack
